这下糟了。要是詹姆士党人起义成功,汉密尔顿可以利用私掠船资助自己的政府,替英格兰与苏格兰的合法国王保住周围的殖民地。然而,私掠船这下成为拖累,可能得为了这件事围捕并牺牲私掠船船长。汉密尔顿下令詹宁斯及其他船长不准离开岛上。
不久之后,在七月底时,有人来敲汉密尔顿的门。
皇家海军的“冒险”号(HMS Adventure)带着乔治国王的命令自英国抵达,预备逮捕汉密尔顿总督,铐上锁链,并带到英格兰。[68]在治理议会带头反对汉密尔顿的海伍德被任命为总督,新总督立刻全面调查汉密尔顿的私掠船。詹宁斯的委任状被没收,但人躲了起来。[69]
这也算是一件好事,因为在八月底时,另一艘船将从伦敦带着乔治国王的官方公告抵达这里。这份公告会印刷出来,并于八月三十日那天在岛上到处张贴,以及在接下来几个星期散布到英属美洲各处。国王已经宣布,说詹宁斯、卡内基、亚许沃斯、韦尔斯及其他人全是海盗。[70]
到那个时候,法律已经管不到詹宁斯和他的手下了,因为他们将在前往避难所的途中,他们的目的地是巴哈马群岛。
