第二帝国风格虽然是在法国发展起来的，但是很快就成了一种国际风格，尤其在19世纪的下半叶，影响极其深广。在欧洲，维也纳的歌剧院（Opera House, 1861—1869）、罗马的意大利银行（Bank of Italy, 1885—1892）、柏林的国会大厦（Reichstag building, 1884—1894）都是这类建筑的代表。第二帝国风格在美国也很有影响，美国波士顿老市政厅（Old City Hall, 1862—1865）、华盛顿海军部大楼（Navy Department Building, 1871—1875）、费城市政厅（City Hall, 1871—1901）等都具有典型的第二帝国风格特征。
第二帝国家具和其他室内用品的设计都具有类似的风格特征，以古典主义为基础，加上代表拿破仑皇权、贵族权势的徽章、符号、象征性的植物、动物纹样，气势大、 金碧辉煌，是拿破仑皇权的反映。
第二帝国风格在美国除了被用来做气派、张扬的大型公共建筑之外，也被一些社区用来做豪宅设计的时候使用，这类住宅常有三角形的塔楼，或者比较尖的屋顶、塔顶、楼顶结合使用，很多时候是把铸铁尖顶和避雷针合一设计，既有功能，又有装饰作用。在美国，维多利亚风格和第二帝国风格混用的情况很多见，原因是美国不像欧洲那样重视传统文脉、讲究来龙去脉，对他们来说，无论维多利亚风格还是第二帝国风格，其实只是一种流行时尚而已，常常是笼统地混杂使用，这种做法，在美国甚至延续到20世纪初期都还可以在某些州政府的项目中见到。
